Becoming, Became, and Everything in Between

Turns out, Becoming was never the challenge. Seeing was.

We talk so much about "becoming" that we sometimes miss that it has been happening all along. This piece is for the overthinkers awake at 2:47 a.m., wondering if you're a seed still underground or a butterfly not quite ready to fly. Spoiler: in this case, it's neither.

I keep hearing it, and honestly, I’m guilty of saying it too: Become you! You gotta become! Become, become, become!

First of all, I get up every day and do the things on my agenda. I navigate the expected and the unexpected because that’s life. I’ve been doing this for years. Is that not becoming? I mean, I’m definitely not not becoming, and I’m certainly becoming older. So at what point does “becoming” actually become? At what point will I have… became?

That may not be grammatically correct, but you get what I’m saying. At what point will I arrive at me? Or am I not becoming at all?

These are the thoughts that I grapple with at 2:47 a.m., especially after daylight saving time completely shifts my understanding of time and space. I lay there staring at the ceiling, wondering if I’m like a butterfly in a cocoon, transitioning from a tight, stagnant space; or like a seed planted deep underground, growing roots out of sight until one day I’ll shoot up taller than the Eiffel Tower.

Or… what if it’s neither? What if I’ve somehow taken a wrong turn...again?

Would you be terribly upset if I told you I have no clue? I know we’re all here for answers, but as a great speaker once said, “I don’t have the answers, Sway!”

Ok, I'm kidding, but on a serious note, here’s what I do know. Every day that you wake up, whether you have a 9-to-5, an unconventional gig, or are currently between jobs, that day holds secrets about who you truly are. Each sunrise delivers 24 hours filled with clues about you. You can’t miss them. You interact with them. But there’s a difference between eyesight and insight.

If you rely only on eyesight, you won’t see how life is revealing you. But if you shift to insight, you’ll start recognizing yourself in the moments that challenge or stretch you.

Maybe it’s the person who cuts you off in traffic and stirs up that inner fire. That irritation reveals your sense of justice and how deeply you value order. Or maybe it’s the job you can’t stand but still show up for without cutting corners. That shows loyalty, discipline, and responsibility. These moments, frustrating or mundane, are daily mirrors reflecting the becoming that’s happening within. Let's dig a little deeper.

Maybe you’ve walked through challenge after challenge, and even when life left you feeling fragmented, you stood firm, fighting for another day, still searching for hope. Why? Because somewhere deep down, you know there’s more to life than what you see. That quiet knowing isn’t just hope, it's strength. Your insight has, in fact, been your survival skill all along. You’ve had to see beyond circumstances just to keep going, and that puts you a step ahead. You see in ways most people don’t. That, that’s God sight.

Invite more of it. Ask God to sharpen that vision, to help you see clearly in every decision, every friendship, every opportunity, every relationship. So often we look beyond our reality in order to cope with pain, not to prevent it. But divine sight isn’t only for survival; it’s for wisdom. Let that sight lead you to build, discern, protect, and grow. Apply it to every part of your life, and you’ll begin to see things shift as the lens of your insight clears and the revelation of you continues to come into view.

There’s a present hidden in every day. It's the revelation of who you are right now. That’s the beauty in the climb that we often miss.

I learned this lesson the hard way hiking the tallest mountain in St. Lucia, Mount Gimie. I couldn’t wait to reach the top and see the breathtaking view below. All along the way, my guides would tell me to stop, hydrate, have a snack, and take in the views around us. By the time we reached the summit, the clouds were thick, and the storm below had erased the view completely. I could barely see anything except brief glimpses when the clouds would shift.

Imagine if I hadn’t paused along the way, if I hadn’t noticed the beauty in each step and each view before the top. I would have been disappointed when I got there.

That’s life. It’s a climb, filled with obstacles waiting to test us when we least expect it. But it’s also filled with you, the version of yourself waiting to be perceived and embraced in every moment along the way.

It’s my hope to live long enough to look back, when I’m no longer racing through my days, and see the beauty that was me. The one who was there all along, being shaped, revealed, and loved through every step of becoming.

You don’t have to chase your becoming. You’re already in it. Every morning you open your eyes, you are the view being revealed.

I'd love to hear from you: What does becoming look like for you right now? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Peace always and in all ways beautiful people, peace!
